Bezirksinspektion

The five Bezirksinspektionen are the district inspection offices of Munich’s Department of Public Order, the KVR. Their work focuses primarily on trade licensing, commercial affairs, and consumer protection.

These 25 districts are divided into five regional sectors, each served by its own local Bezirksinspektion:

  • Bezirksinspektion Mitte is responsible for Districts 1, 2, and 3, including Altstadt-Lehel, Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt, and Maxvorstadt.
  • Bezirksinspektion Süd is responsible for Districts 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, and 20, including Sendling, Thalkirchen, Obergiesing, Untergiesing, and Ramersdorf.
  • Bezirksinspektion West is responsible for Districts 9, 21, 22, 23, and 25, including Schwanthalerhöhe, Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Pasing, and Laim.
  • Bezirksinspektion Ost is responsible for Districts 5, 13, 14, 15, and 16, including Au-Haidhausen, Bogenhausen, Berg am Laim, and Trudering.
  • Bezirksinspektion Nord is responsible for Districts 4, 10, 11, 12, and 24, including Schwabing, parts of Maxvorstadt, Moosach, and Milbertshofen

Are you unsure which district your street is located in?

On the Munich Portal, you will find a search field at the bottom of each Bezirksinspektion topic page (for example, here). Simply enter the street name and, if applicable, the house number where you plan to conduct your business or activity. After clicking “Next,” the correct Bezirksinspektion will be displayed at the very bottom of the page.

Special use occurs when public street space is utilized beyond general public use such as walking, driving, or parking. The most frequently requested types of special use include:

Please note that according to the City of Munich’s special regulation § 20 Abs. 6 Sondernutzungsrichtlinien mobile vendors such as snack vans, food trucks, food carts, coffee bikes and others on public ground may not park on public ground. Selling from a vendor’s tray is also not allowed.

Is your mobile vending operation going to be located on private property? Before applying for permits or licences from Bezirksinspektion verify if your preferred location is a good candidate for zoning approval. Zoning refers to municipal or local laws and regulations that govern how land may be used. Each zone allows certain activities or uses and prohibits others. The local construction authority, the Lokalbaukommission, based at the Munich Department of Urban Planning enforces these zoning regulations, reviews projects and proposals for compliance, and issues certain permits. Please check with Lokalbaukommission to determine if sales and service uses are allowed at your preferred location. You must also secure the property owner’s consent. Entrepreneurs are strongly encouraged to obtain zoning approval before signing a lease.

Are you planing a home-based business? To find out whether your home complies to residential zoning rules allow, please contact Lokalbaukommission. Depending on your type of business, you may also need additional special permits relating to signage, noise levels, or health regulations.

As the owner of a food business, you have a responsibility to ensure that you do not contribute to a build-up of fats, oils, grease and starches in wastewater system. Grease traps and separators are required in businesses and facilities where the quantities of greasy or rinse water produced exceed the rates normally associated with private households.
